But you should not aim to be an underdog just to be more likeable. If you are not a poker player, never bet your money on the underdog all the time or you might find yourself having money troubles later.

It is part of the professional poker players job to determine the mathematical and interpersonal proper move. Even if his hand is weaker than his opponents, he knows how to turn things to his advantage and refuse to become the underdog. His bet is that the opponent would not likely call. And in order to make this a reality, he needs to bluff or do other stuffs that will fool the opponent. This is not fun for a professional player. As a matter of fact, it is a nerve-wracking scene right there. But he has to keep his faade and demeanour perfectly calm in order to succeed at his job.
